Who I Am

My name is Don Fukuda (initials df -- get it?), I was born in Ogden, Utah, raised in Los Angeles and now I work and live in Santa Cruz, California. Santa Cruz is a beach town located between Monterey and San Francisco (directly across from San Jose AKA: Silicon Valley), and is home to UCSC (University of California, Santa Cruz -- home of the "Banana Slugs", featured on John Travolta's T-shirt in "Pulp Fiction"), the Boardwalk (seaside amusement park with the oldest active wooden roller-coaster on the west coast - featured in movies like The Sting, Bad Boys and Sudden Impact, among others) and Steamer Lane (world-famous surf location), among other attractions. I've lived here since 1972 when I moved up here from Los Angeles where I was a member of the GAIU (Graphic Arts International Union), and held journeyman status as a cameraman and color correction artist.

Take a look at a photograph of the Pogonip in Santa Cruz that I took during a big storm in 1982.

I've worked as a professional and fine-art photographer (published in the Los Angeles Times, OMNI magazine, Cosmopolitan magazine, Columbia Records, Santa Cruz Metro, Santa Cruz Independent, Santa Cruz Weekly, Good Times, Santa Cruz Express, Cruzan, Monterey Life, independent CD & Tape jackets, and movie credits in: Miss or Myth, Chinese Gold and Madalena Z -- also group and individual art photographic exhibitions featuring large-format, hand-colored and polaroid-collage works) and worked at UCSC for 8 years as Senior Photographer & head of the photographic services department. I still enjoy photography as a hobby but I don't work commercially (I still produce fine art photography & digital imaging, though).

I've lived with my 'significant other', Terri, for the past 8+ years. She works with an association management company that provides services for national organizations. We have a cat named Keisha (who has 3 good legs and 1 with partial function (due to what we think was an animal attack when she was a kitten that required surgery and a metal pin to save the leg).

What I Do For Fun

In past years, I've played league softball, ran 6k races, rode bicycles in team triathlons, raced road course and century (100mi) bicycle races, played competitive 2-man beach volleyball, played league tennis, competitive racquetball, and other active sports pursuits.

As the years go by, my activities have toned-down a bit. I still enjoy bicycling, but limit it to noncompetitive mountain biking and cruising around. I play a little tennis, enjoy walking and hiking (we are near Big Sur), white water rafting, and always look forward to camping in the mountains. Occasionally I enjoy a night at the bowling alley and the impromptu game of Ping-Pong or pool. I enjoy travel, classic & exotic cars and motorcycles.

I enjoy snorkeling and have learned SCUBA -- I like doing these things in my favorite places like Maui, St. Thomas, Grand Cayman, Aruba, Jamaica and Cozumel. I like warm water and tropical locations! A recently discovered travel method I really enjoy is Cruise Ships -- I love a floating hotel with great food, room service, and a Casino that takes you to exotic locations.

I don't know if you'd call it fun, but I like producing websites -- I made the site for MINT Computer, and also have made them for Antique Dealers in California and Hawaii, a local conservancy organization, a Consulting company in Aptos, Ca., my old High School in Los Angeles, and various family members.

At home, I enjoy cooking, taking care of my garden, backgammon, playing with the cat, and producing digital art and music on my PC. I enjoy a variety of music (classical, jazz, pop, ethnic, country, rock, r & b, blues, world, reggae, salsa, gamelan, etc.), especially live performances. I enjoy movies (especially classic cinema), reading and plays (especially Shakespeare). I play guitar (currently a Fender Stratocaster American Standard) and used to have an oldies garage-band that played local clubs and private parties.
